Brand Verification (A2P 10DLC)

Definition

10DLC Brand Verification is the process of validating a business entity (the “Brand”) with The Campaign Registry (TCR) as part of the required setup for A2P (Application-to-Person) 10-digit long code messaging. This step is mandatory for any software provider or business looking to send compliant A2P text messages via local phone numbers in the United States.

What Is Brand Verification?

Brand verification is the first and most essential step in the A2P 10DLC registration process. It confirms the legal identity and legitimacy of a business before any messaging Campaigns can be launched. TCR—an industry-wide registry created to support transparency and trust in A2P messaging—oversees this verification process.

During brand registration, businesses must provide key information such as:

  • Legal business name
  • EIN (Employer Identification Number) or Tax ID
  • Business address
  • Website domain
  • Type of business (e.g., private, public, nonprofit)

TCR then cross-references this information with public records and data sources to assign the Brand a verification status and trust score.

Why Is 10DLC Brand Verification Required?

Brand verification plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity of A2P messaging. By verifying who is sending messages, carriers and registries can:

  • Mitigate fraud, spoofing, and spam
  • Ensure proper throughput limits based on brand type and use case
  • Enable visibility and accountability across the ecosystem

Without a verified Brand, a business cannot register messaging Campaigns or send messages using 10DLC numbers.

How the Process Works

Here’s a high-level overview of the 10DLC brand verification flow:

  1. Create a Brand Profile
The CSP (Campaign Service Provider) creates a Brand record on behalf of the customer in TCR.

  2. Submit Business Details
The required business info is submitted accurately—especially the EIN and legal name, which must match official records.

  3. Verification and Scoring
TCR verifies the information and assigns a trust score (0–100). This score impacts throughput and vetting requirements for future Campaigns.

  4. Authentication+ (if applicable)
For certain brand types (such as publicly traded entities), a 2FA process called Authentication+ may be triggered to further verify the brand contact.

  5. Brand Status Assigned
Once verified, the brand receives a “Verified” or “Vetted_Verified” status and can begin registering campaigns.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • EIN mismatches: Make sure the EIN and legal name exactly match IRS records.
  • Using personal or shared emails: Use a valid business domain email to avoid delays with Authentication+.
  • Incomplete or inconsistent information: Double-check that all data is correct and consistent with public listings.
